Subject: Space1999: Clifton Jones
Hi y'all,
Just a quick one...
Watching The Professionals last night (boy does that take me right
back...), I found it was one I hadn't seen. Called "The Madness Of Mickey
Hamilton", it made a swipe at government funding of the National Health
Service - it was in a mess then, and it's in an even worse mess now - and
treatment of mental health patients. Things haven't changed in the 17 or
so years between that episode and now...
Politics aside, Clifton Jones appeared in the episode playing a small part
of an official of some kind from a fictional African country who, after
leaving a hospital and getting into his car, gets shot by Hamilton and
taken back into the hospital. The character's name was St Jacques, and it
was his shooting which got CI5 involved. Had Hamilton hit his
intended target (a doctor) then it would have been a police job.
I'm keeping the tape and if I get video capture stuff for my birthday, I'll
try and put a shot or two (no pun intended) on the UKVL.

I don't usually watch this show but I tuned in just to see our favorite
doctor (or spy if your a big "Mission: Impossible" fan) in another role.
I think she did a good job. For anyone who watches on a regular basis,
is the show usually this metaphysical / religious? That ending sequence
was really out there. I thought it was great. Really reminded me of
Year 1. Since I saw it in black and white, was the sequence in color or
did they switch to b/w. Again, this was not your average run-of-the-mill
cop show episode. Definitely out in the ether. Comments, anyone?

Space: The Imagination Station will be airing the movie MOON ZERO TWO on

In regards to Jonathan Ward's queries about Columbia House Canada, the
last I heard from them is that they hope to be able to bring the SPACE:
1999 collection here in the near future. In other words, they do not
have it now and may or may not soon. I believe they will wait to see how
it sells in the US club before offering it to Canadians. My last message
from them was in November 1997.
Also I brought up that Space: The Imagination Station was airing MOON
ZERO TWO (with Catherina Von Schell)on Thursday night midnight EST.
That's tomorrow folks. Since then I have found out that the CBC is
airing the 1979 film THE SHAPE OF THINGS TO COME this Saturday at 2:00
in the afternoon. At least the local Toronto affiliate is - I am not
sure if the entire network is airing it. This crudfest was a badly made
Canadian film billed as a loose sequel to H.G. Well's classic. Barry
Morse is in it. I also believe Sylvia Anderson was involved in some
capacity on the production side.

What has Gerry Anderson been up to since the end of 1999? I know he did

anyone know if he plans to return to live action?

Subject: Space1999: Re: Gerry Anderson
The Secret Service was made in 1969 and ran for 13 half hour colour
episodes. Based around the exploits of a parish priest, Father Stanley
Unwin (voiced by Stanley Unwin, a man who has made a living talking
gobbledegook) and British Intelligence agent Matthew Harding who poses as
the priest's gardener. They have a device which can shrink people without
killing them, which they use to help British Intelligence. Kind of Joe 90
with a priest and a different gadget. Joe 90 was better.
Terrahawks was a more recent thing, made in 1983. Again using puppets, it
somehow lacked the character of Thunderbirds and Captain Scarlet. 39 half
hour episodes, the premise revolved around a group of ugly looking adnriods
from the planet Guk using Mars a as a base to attack Earth.
The Terrahawks is a group set up to defend Earth from these attacks,
comprising amongst others a brilliant clone, Dr Tiger Ninestein (9 clones
of a Dr Stein were made, hence the name), and an international singing
star, Kate Kestrel.
Too many in-jokes and attempts at comedy spoiled the series for me. If you
use Captain Scarlet and Thunderbirds as bench marks, whilst the puppet
technology had doubtless improved, the actual stories couldn't match either
predecessor series.
Space Precinct is showing on the Sci-Fi channel over here, after running on
the BBC. Reviews were mixed and the usual puppet jokes were made despite
their being boring and predictable. Some like it, some do not. I will
only say that it isn't Space:1999 or UFO.
I do not know for sure what Gerry is up to these days. I do hope that he's
involved in the live action Thunderbirds, so it doesn't end up a complete
pile of trash. Recent remakes like The Saint do not bode well.

Also, I've just finished scan/cleanup on a quite lengthy and
interesting interview with Johnny Byrne that appeared in a Danish
fanzine called Intercom One in 1982. I know Johnny thinks well of
this interview, so when it was offered by Ryan Case I added it to the
Cybrary's Publications/Fan Articles section.
Now the problem. DNAI FINALLY updated to the FrontPage 98 server
and of course FrontPage 98 has to have problems with that. I'm
having problems publishing anything today but once it's straightened
out, this article will be in the Cybrary and the Master Fan Database
form should be functional again. Since FrontPage will require that
the entire Cybrary be republished rather than just the changes (due
to the server upgrade), best case scenario for seeing this stuff is
about ten hours from now -- that's if all goes well, which past
experience tells me it won't.

Hi guys,
I was just thumbing through today's TV guide here in the UK and came
across a programme that's on tonight called 'Modern Times'.
In case the list has not yet been notified, the programme description
is as follows:
Modern Times
9.00pm BBC2
'Minimalism may be all about nothing, but this gem of a documentary by
Rebecca Frayn is full of nooks and crannies. In reaction to the
eighties mentality of collecting objects, the chic way of life for the
super rich is to live in a place carved out of space and light.
The idea that clutter is done away with is very Zen, and if you have
£900 floating around, you can stay in Anouska Hempel's hotel for a
night, where every bed is ironed after it is made and orchid stems are
positioned just so...'
Could this be the actress that made appearances in UFO and Space 1999?
There can't be many people with that name. It's got to be worth

Actually, it *is* listed at PBS's site at
http://www.pbs.org/whatson/1998/03/N/19980320.html
for 9:00 p.m.(EST), today (03/20), running for one hour.
Unlike most of the big U.S. networks (such as ABC, CBS, NBC, and Fox),
where individual stations broadcast the prime time network programs
almost without exception, PBS stations tend to be more independent,
and are often organized in their own subnetworks that can produce and
broadcast some of their own programs in addition to (or in place of)
the national offerings -- or broadcast the national offering but at a
different time. Terry and I are both in the same state and under the
same public television group, which, ironically enough, has chosen to
broadcast a locally-produced special in place of "George Bailey."
Pity, because I missed it the first time.
So *do* check your local listings if you are in the U.S., in case your
PBS station does go with the national offering.

Sorry to disappoint, but Barry has finished filming "Taxman" and has headed
back to wife Sydney Sturgess and his London digs.
He was on location for a week, then spent a week with family in Toronto before
heading back home. The production team mis-calculated, apparently, the time
needed for filming and consequently Barry said the hours he worked were some
of the longest he's endured in his 62 years in show business. On one day
alone they filmed for 16 hours straight!
In the film, Barry plays the role of the great-great Grandfather of Billy
Zane, who appears to Billy's character in the form of a ghost. He had praise
for Billy as an actor and noted that he "was quite a handsome lad" as well.
Billy and Barrry worked together almost exclusively for the week of filming.
As we find out more information on the filming and ultimate release
dates/information on the film, I'll pass it on the list.

I really watched any of the show in many years. It was nice to see
Martin Landau sitting in the audience shortly after I turned on the TV.
(Its still a shock though to see how old he is - he will always be John
Koenig to me.) I also saw the bit where past Oscar actors were on stage
celebrating 70 years of Oscar winners. Of course each one was introduced
and Landau was amongst them. He is indeed a talented actor and I am glad
that he had gotten recognition for his part in ED WOOD (How many years
has it been?). Looking back to 1999, I feel the calibre of the actors in
the series made it stand out as much as the music and special effects.
Landau had good company with Bain, Morse and Schell.

In Germany SF airs daily at 5.15 p.m. THE ADVENTURES OF SUPERBOY (produced by
Fred Freiberger). The series is great!
Today I bought I BATMAN/CAPTAIN AMERICA crossover comic book, which was written
by John Byrne. Was the writer "our" Johnny Byrne of SPACE: 1999?

Nope. Well, not exactly. Well, kind of. :-)
John Byrne is a Canadian comics artist who is best known for his work
bringing the X-Men to their present high-popularity back in the early
eighties. However, a few years before that, he worked for the small,
struggling Charleton Comics company, who produced the Space:1999 comics, and
Byrne actually did a number of the covers for that series. Odd little
symmetry, there, eh?

I was flipping the channels this Saturday night as I usually do when not
much is on. Suddenly on the Buffalo PBS station there was a documentary
on the British royal family. It wasn't the footage itself that caught my
eye. It was the narrator whom the camera eventually focused on. It was
Brian Blessed. A bit bigger than I remember him as Doctor Rowland or
even Mentor but it was definitely him.
