Subject: Materials and elements of the Eagle
Hello Alphans,
QUESTION TO ALL YOU
I want to know with which MATERIALS and ELEMENTS the technicians of
moonbase Alpha have built the Eagle.
There is an episode in which this comes told: is it necessary TO
CUDGEL ONE'S BRAINS!
I give you 48 hours of time for the response,then I will give you all
the data.
Good search!

In "Space Brain", the 'meteorite' was analyzed in the lab as being made
of aluminum, titanium, platics, nuclear fuel, and a small ammount of
human tissue. It was Wayland's crushed eagle.
Aluminum and titanium are widely used in aerospace applications.
Aluminum has a very low denity, giving it a high ratio of
strength to density. Titanium also has a low density, and has a very high
melting temperature, and so is used for parts which are subjected to
temperatures too high for aluminum. Eagles are nuclear powered,
but (at least in the english version of 1999) it isn't specified
wheather the fuel is uranium, plutonium, or some fusion fuel like
deuterium. If 1999 were made today, they would probably add something
like "carbon-carbon composites" and "boro-silicate glass ceramics" which
are used on NASA's spaceshuttle for heat protection.

Titanium, huh?
Well we keeping reading they had the capability on Alpha to build more
Eagles, and yet in "The Metamorph" they have so little titanium that Helena
is picking up little chunks of it and putting them into her pockets in the
caves on Psychon for when they get home.
Maybe they only had the capability to build DINKY brand Eagles instead of
full-sized functional ones.
FAN JUSTIFICATION #9,998: They found a replacement for titanium in the later
Eagles they built after leaving Earth orbit.

Actually, wasn't it supposed to be "tiranium" (whatever *that* is, presumably
some unknown ore)? I have read/seen it as both titanium and tiranium in
differing versions of the episode. This betrays some confusion on the
subject amongst the writers, which could be the cause of the on-screen
confusion.

Certainly sounds possible, considering they had many of the finest minds of
/two/ worlds on board Alpha.
Wait a second, "Space Brain" is before "The Metamorph," so wouldn't it be
that perhaps they ran out? Sorry to nitpick, as I enjoy making up such fan
justifications myself.
BTW, what is "FAN JUSTIFICATION #1,999"?

I'm 1999 percent certain that it's titanium as it is spoken of and appears as
text (the word "Titanium") on a monitor at Lou Picard's station in Command
Center in the beginning of "The Metamorph."

Anything's possible. This can be FAN JUSTIFICATION #9,998(A) if you'd like.
:)

I think it's the justification that the Season 1 lovers cite for killing Fred
Freiberger, along with 1999 ways to accomplish the act!

If I remember correctly,(with all this discussion about titanium eagles),
in "The Last Sunset" they worked to create a Silicon? coated eagle to
ward off the effects of the micro dust particles. Also I woud tend to
think that there would be some type of mining operation there.

Subject: Features of the Eagle
Hi all,
I want to know:
1- The number of the Eagles on the Moonbase Alpha;
2- The speed that an Eagle could achieve;
3- How much persons could bring;
4- With which arms the Eagle is gifted;
5- If each Eagle is protected from a shield;
6- If the Eagle is the only spacecraft on Alpha
After have seen,in "Star Wars",the Falcon Millenium,that could
achieve the iper-speed,I have likened the Eagle to a sparrow.
But I think that S1999 is the best for the contents human and
psychological.

Hello Ermes.
I'll try to answer as many of your questions as I can....
1."Alpha supports a fleet of 12 transporter, 26 recon freighters, and 2
rescue Eagles on 24 hour alert status." I'm sure there are more total,
but that's how many are kept ready to go.
2.Eagles can achieve 15% of light velocity.
3. Transpoorter Eagles: 8, Freighter Eagles: 2, Recon Eagles: 6, Rescue
Eagles: 6 (or 4 with 2 beds for patients.
4. Some (not all) were equiped with 2 lasers ans 2 space to space missles.
5. I don't recall any of them having shields of any sort.
6. Asfar as I know, the Eagle was the only spacecraft on Alpha, (at least
it was the only type to survive the explosion). Because of it's modular
service pod, it was versitle enough to meet normal day to day needs.
All the technical data I have is from the Eagle blueprints from Starlog
#7. Everything else is my best guess.
