Subject: Episode Analysis - The Last Enemy

Hi all!

As I mentioned in an earlier post, here's my uncompleted analysis of
"The Last Enemy"...hope you like it and will add to it!

-----
    Last Enemy -

"The Last Enemy" is at once one of the poorest episodes and one of the
most thought provoking. In terms of action and acting, the episode falls
apart. Dr. Russell and Victor Bergman merely stand around and make facial
gestures as Koenig confronts and solves the problem. The episode is riddled
with flaws, such as when missiles fly overhead the Alphans cover their ears
as though sound could travel through the vacuum of space.

On another level though, this episode contains some thought provoking
elements which can be summed up as follows:

       - battle of the sexes (male leader, female leader)
       - the warring planets do not see each other directly just as men &
women do not see each other directly
       - women are devious (fake destruction of Dionne's ship)
       - men are even more devious (Koenig's trick and destruction of
         Dionne's ship)

---------

Well, there you have it...written years ago...I have to see the episode
again to add to and refine the above analysis...but I hope it sparks some
conversation anyway!

It was not my favourite episode, but the underlying subject matter of the war between the sexes is very interesting. Also, for the 70's, it was a pretty controversial topic (as it is today). At least Space 1999 was trying to tackle the big issues in Sci-Fi and society. Anyway, What could the Alphans possible do than look bewildered when two powerful nations are shooting at each other on Alphan territory?? Ask them to stop politely!? Dione got what she deserved. She was a warrior who didn't calculate the strength or desperation of the people she was using - the Alphans. Yours, Cecilia.

Actually, covering your ears would not be a bad idea. A warhead detonating outside Alpha would still pound it with a large amount of rapidly moving matter. Once it hit the base the inner atmosphere would transmit some of the energy as sound. Even rocket motor thrust would produce this effect to a minor degree depending on how close they passed overhead.
