Subject: Space1999: "Episode by Episode" Archiving

Alphans,

Though behind in "distilling" Thread Pages, I have added a special page for
the Episode by Episode discussion. Instead of the usual grids that the
Thread Page indices have, this page is laid out more like the table of
contents of a book, in this case a "book" of analyses and commentary by
list members. Since the first six "chapters" are already up, anyone who's
missed the early "Episode by Episode" discussion can review these with ease.

Currently, it's just one page with links to the threads, which themselves
are in the usual "Thread Pages" format; but later, I'll add more to this,
perhaps nicer titles in each "chapter," links from these "chapters" to
other related threads from the mailing list, etc.

At the moment, my main page does not yet link to this new page, but you can
find it at:

I think someone suggested in December that the discussion be archived, and
I hope this fits the bill reasonably well. If anyone else has further
suggestions, let me know.

Thanks,

----
David Welle

It's incredible how much we've written during the last months, having a look at David's "book". I wonder, perhaps this could published as a regular book when we reach the end? If this were nicely made, I know that I for certain would very much like a copy of this, and perhaps others on this list feel the same way? Perhaps even Space:1999 enthusiasts not subscribed to this list could be interested in a copy? Randomnly reading some of our comments on BREAKAWAY and GUARDIAN OF PIRI I feel this is well worth of printing. Perhaps it could be put out for sale at the next Space:1999 conferance or any Sci-fi conferance at the end of the year? For me this episode by episode discussion, originally proposed by Mateo, has been the most thrilling event on this list since I subscribed. Petter

Selected "outstanding" snippets could be used on the webring's sites to promote the list and act as a taster for the full publication. If current discussion input continues, the final publication will be a big one! Respect to David for keeping our discussions and putting them together in this format, and to us all for such intelligent discussions. Shatters the illusion of "sci-fi geeks" irredeemably! Could help convice PolyGram to do something too... This is worth further discussion, methinks. Creatures of the Moon, chip in your ideas! Brian Dowling - Online Alphan #144 - Birmingham, England
From: David Acheson (dkach@hot44mail.com) Subject: Space1999: Episode Threads Date: Thu, 12 Mar 1998 18:34:20 EST Just wanted to express my appreciation to David Welle for his job of posting the episode-by-episode threads at his web site. It was indeed interesting going back to the earlier discussions. These and future discussions will make a great public commentary on the series from its fans. David Acheson

Thanks Petter, and everyone else. It would be interesting to see how much we end up with in the end. Currently, on the seven episodes whose discussions I have edited into "chapters," there is 455 kilobytes (yes, almost half a MB) of material, which is an average of 65K per episode. That itself, by a conservative estimate, would be 16 pages of printed text, which at that rate would total 768 pages at the end of 48 episodes. Whew, we've been busy! :-) That would be some book! It would certainly be an interesting book. Maybe someone would know how to make that a feasible project? >Randomnly reading some of our comments on BREAKAWAY and GUARDIAN >OF PIRI I feel this is well worth of printing. Even if it turns out to be that huge, is there any way to adapt this suggestion to catch other's interests? >For me this episode by episode discussion, originally proposed by Mateo, has >been the most thrilling event on this list since I subscribed. Absolutely. I've enjoyed the discussions, and it's been a good kick to get me going on my own writing again. Maybe too good of a kick, considering how much I *have* been writing! :-) ----David P.S. I've just added an eighth thread. I've also worked to turn them from the semi-HTMLized (pre-formatted) Thread Pages form into a fully HTMLized, nicer looking (IMO) form. P.P.S. I now have this section linked from my main page.

With some selected high quality graphics in the right places it would look damned good. That way, if the book is going to be a definite project (might a web based CD or PDF version be cheaper to produce?) then it doesn't suffer at the hands of the promotional version. The PDF file could be e-mailed or printed out, keeping the same high quality of presentation either way. I think I'll borrow the Adobe Acrobat CD from work to see what it can do... > Absolutely. I've enjoyed the discussions, especailly as it's started me watching episodes regularly again. It's surprising the things you actually forget from a story when you haven't seen it for a while. I have no complaints about the length of the episode postings - it would be a case of pot calling kettle black bearing in mind how much I can rattle on, and I do enjoy reading other Alphans' viewpoints; I've often dived for a book or video after reading someone's thoughts on an episode. If it wasn't for work I would be suffering from square eyes by now!
