I was wondering about the sleeve color-coding on the Alphan uniforms.

As I recall, Tony was Chief of Security, and wore red--yet other security
personnel through both seasons always seemed to wear purple. I know the
Starlog tech manual says that pilots wore orange, but to me the color on
Alan looks the same as on Sandra and Yasko (yellow). And Fraser, who seemed
to mostly act as a pilot, wore red. Am I missing something as to which
departments/sections people were assigned to, or did the costuming
department not pay much attention to such details? Can anyone provide any
insight?

That's what I used to think until someone pointed out Alan's sleeve (and year 2 collar) is a kind of "orange juice" orange. In some scenes where Alan stands right next to Sandra, it's possible to tell the difference (on laserdisc copies anyway). >And Fraser, who seemed to mostly act as a pilot, wore red. Like Tony, it's because he also has responsibilities on the command staff -- (the equivalent of Operative Kate who wears red), relief for when Alan can't fill the Recon position, and it probably designates his more senior status. It's probably also because he's not "just" a pilot. Perhaps the Alphans had to reassign people after Breakaway and so their designations were not so clear, hence overlaps like this. In reality what probably happened is that wardrobe thought the actors looked better in these colors and so justified it (in their own minds). I think this is the reason ST:TNG changed the uniform colors from classic Trek (because Picard looked "washed out" in command gold and black, better in red/black).
