Subject: Space1999: 1999 Movie Month
Date: Wed, 04 Mar 1998 05:55:35 EST

Hello Alphans:

I had a sneaking suspicion so I decided to check out the web site of
SPACE: THE IMAGINATION STATION and I was able to confirm it there. March
is the SPACE: 1999 movie month on the Canadian sci-fi cable network. The
four movies will be airing every Wednesday at the god-awful hour of
midnight with a repeated viewing on the following Sunday at 2:00 in the
afternoon (a better slot but why not prime time like they did with
INVASION: UFO?).

Anyway the dates are as follows:

March 4 - COSMIC PRINCESS (repeats March 8)
March 11 - DESTINATION: MOONBASE ALPHA (repeats March 15)
March 18 - JOURNEY THROUGH THE BLACK SUN (repeats March 22)
March 25 - ALIEN ATTACK (repeats March 29)

Again, I am not a big fan of these edited-from-the-series movies but its
a start. Hopefully there can be enough interest generated that will
allow the network to eventually run the full series - and in a better
time slot.

Wow, I feel like a kid in a candy store!

Also, I remember someone talking about "Cosmic Princess" being screened as a part of Mystery Science Theatre 3000 (I think I have that name right). Are copies of that show available anywhere?? Thanks, Tony

The Sci-Fi Channel Europe has recently started showing MST3K, and I love it! <flame shield> Some dodgy episodes of Blake's 7 and Doctor Who are prime targets for this sort of treatment. I'd love to see what Cosmic Princess given such a workover. </flame shield>

The Sci-Fi Channel > Europe has recently started showing MST3K, and I love it! It's true. I have a very poor quality copy. All I can remember off the top of my head is that the MST3K people call the volcanic surface of Psychon the land of Dairy Queen at one point. It's pretty boring to watch actually. In fact, I don't think I've ever watched the whole thing. Before I get nine million requests, sorry, but I don't have facilities to duplicate videotapes.
From: Geoff Friesen (geoff@gate76west.net) Subject: Re: Space: 1999 movies being aired on Canadian SPACE Channel Date: Tue, 3 Mar 1998 20:14:57 -0600 Hi Robert. The Canadian SPACE Channel is broadcasting the four Space: 1999 movies, Cosmic Princess, Alien Attack, Journey through the Black Sun, and Destination Moonbase Alpha, this month on Wednesday nights starting tomorrow night at 12:00 PM EST. The first movie being shown is Cosmic Princess. This bodes well for the full release of all 48 episodes on the SPACE Channel. I would like to approach the SPACE Channel web site and ask if they would add links to your site along with Daphnee's campaign site. I think this could help to get all 48 episodes aired on SPACE. I'm hoping that introducing many new fans to Space: 1999 could help revive interest in seeing something put together for next year. Can I have your permission to approach SPACE requesting that they add a link to your site (using the URL http://www.cybrary1999.com)? I am no longer connected to the Space: 1999 mailing list. I wonder if it would do any good letting them know (unless they know already). Sincerely, Geoff Friesen
From: judas@net25matters.co.uk (B J Dowling) Date: Wed, 4 Mar 1998 20:18:51 +0000 Subject: Space1999: OT: Blake's 7 Hi y'all, This week saw the release of the first two of twenty six Blake's 7 20th anniversary edition video cassettes. A limited edition of 7000 of each volume has been licensed by the BBC and will be released on the Fabulous label. I've not heard of this label before, so I'll try and investigate them further. The cover artwork is good (done by a design agency rather than in-house) but the tapes themselves appear to be of the usual BBC quality - dodgy.. I'll be able to find out more when I get back to work on Monday. Whether you like the series or not, these releases are a landmark for the BBC - they appear to have given care of one of their most popular sci fi products to an outside body - promotion and production completely independent of the BBC (and perhaps better as well!). I'm happy about the releases, but surprised that the BBC don't appear to have had their usual high level of control in this project. This is more evidence to throw PolyGram's way - if they don't want to re release the episodes on video, there are companies out there who will happily undertake the venture for them. These tapes set a benchmark for what we expect from PolyGram. VideoPlus Direct and Engale Marketing should carry stocks of these tapes should anyone outside the UK want to order them. Contacts for these companies are detailed in the UKVL.

From: David Acheson (dkach@hot53mail.com) Subject: Space1999: Advertising 1999 Date: Sat, 07 Mar 1998 10:40:04 EST Alphans: Was watching Space: The Imagination Station this morning and was almost blown over by one of the advertisments during a commercial break. A heavy-duty, action-packed ad for the March SPACE: 1999 movies currently being aired. The announcer made no reference to the movies being movies but advertised the March airings as SPACE: 1999. With scenes from BREAKAWAY, THE BRINGERS OF WONDER, THE METAMORPH, AND SPACE WARP and new stuff created by the network it was one of the greatest ads for the series I have ever seen. They kept it pretty well season neutral by keeping mainly to showing John, Helena and Alan (who actually had speaking lines in the ad). Victor was briefly shown but no Maya or Tony. Of course tons of effects in the ad and the ever famous Eagles. This is the first time since the CBC aired the series in the mid 1970's that I have ever seen 1999 ads on the air and it was pretty exciting. Its appears that the cable station wants to pump up this March movie airing. Lets hope they have the plans to eventually run the full 48 episodes. Just give me some time to come off the walls and I should be fine. David Acheson
From: David Acheson (dkach@hot67mail.com) Subject: Space1999: TV Guide Bloopers Date: Wed, 11 Mar 1998 12:06:33 EST Had a good laugh last night when next week's TV Guide came in the mail. First, they listed next week's 1999 movie on Space: The Imagination Station as ALIEN ATTACK and not JOURNEY THROUGH THE BLACK SUN. Not funny yet. But I howled when I read the cast listing: Martin Landau and Barbara Eden. What is Jeannie doing on Moonbase Alpha? A weird combination indeed. Thought I had to share it with you.

From: eagle1@mb.sympatico27.ca Date: Thu, 12 Mar 1998 10:01:11 -0600 Subject: Space1999: Beautifully Un-edited Bloopers from Space! Hi all! Just enjoyed watching Destination Moonbase Alpha last night on the Canadian Space Channel. Taped it of course. Seems to have been broadcast very much intact too. It doesn't look like it had any edits done by the Space Channel, none that I noticed anyway. The only parts I could see missing were the ones done by the production crew when they converted the two episodes into the "movie". I watched the Bringers of Wonder as the American Sci-fi channel broadcast it a while ago thanks to a friend who had it on tape and it was LOADED with really bad edits everywhere! I'm glad that the Space channel here seems to be doing things right! Even that really funky end title song was NOT interrupted by those REALLY annoying voice overs that are usually so common on other stations! Even the ending ITC logo flash was left in! I hope they continue with that policy. Makes watching a show SO much more enjoyable!!!! The sound quality was nice and crisp too, for an old tv show. Bravo Space! Thank you for not screwing up!!!!! Maybe all the Canadian list members could write them their support... Let'em know we approve? Noticed a blooper! When Koenig drops down from the Eagle in a harness and tries to stop Carter in the Moonbuggy, there's a shot where the buggy rams it's front end into a huge "rock" about eight feet tall and the buggy's nose goes up in the air. What also happens is that the entire massive "rock" shifts to the left about a foot upon impact! Anybody notice any more? Maybe we should compile a "Nitpicker's guide to Space: 1999 like somebody did with the Star Truck shows! That would be fun! By the way, all you Eagle fans out there check out Barry Scannell's new Web page dedicated to the construction of his 44" Eagle model! Quite informative! I noticed that in this broadcast, they added "star Wars" style titles at the beginning, where the words fade into the distance. One phrase that stands out as particularly inane went something like this: "The moon, which circled the Earth in an orbit as fixed and unchanging as that of the Sun..." And by the way, that end song vocal was credited to a man named "Oliver Onions". Do you think this is a real name? Mike
